I’m Nat Bartsch, a pianist/composer from Melbourne, Australia.
Welcome to Amica Records: a home for genre-bending, kind music.
I’ve been composing, recording and performing my own music for 15 years. In that time I’ve been lucky to release eight albums, perform across the world and shared the stage and the studio with some extraordinary musicians.
My music is often categorised as jazz, classical or neoclassical, and I am grateful to belong to these communities to various degrees. But I’ve realised it’s between genres that I feel most comfortable. Writing chamber music, but improvising in it (Hope). Composing neoclassical piano pieces, but with jazz harmony (Hometime). Writing children’s lullabies, but making them elegant for an adult listener (Forever, and No Time At All). Re-recording classical pieces with jazz musicians (Forever More), adding classical and post-rock overdubs on top (Hope Renewed).
I am honoured that my music is sometimes played by people in profoundly personal moments - from childbirth to death. I find solace in others’ music in just the same way. I listen widely, and I’ve discovered some common threads between different artists and genres that have always resonated with me. It could be in their use of space, or repetition, or harmony, or ambience, or something more intangible, like kindness.
I’ve realised that the adjectives assembled above are the musical qualities and aesthetic choices I value most, more than any genre category. It’s what my music often sounds like, (or hopes to sound like).
Over the years I’ve released music for ABC Classic, ABC Jazz, Rufus and Moderna Records. I’ve enjoyed collaborating with like-minded artists, and helping emerging and mid-career musicians embark upon releasing their music. Through all of this, I’ve reflected upon the things that matter most to me as an artist: autonomy, originality, authenticity, community, wellbeing.
And so, Amica Records is born. It’s based in Australia, but supported by the legends at Moderna Records (based in Canada), and digital distributor IDOL (based in France and USA). For the moment, it’s a home for my own releases. In the not-too-distant future, we’ll be able to support a handful of other artists too: releasing their music, or offering mentorship, industry skills development and audio production. Building a community across borders and genres.
I’m stepping into the unknown, but I know exactly what I want it to sound like.
